Josh McKoon, the current chairman of the Georgia Republican Party, announced Friday that he will not run for a third term. His decision ends his leadership role at the state party as his current term nears its end.

McKoon made the announcement in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution first reported the news earlier in the day. He became chairman in 2023 after being drafted for the position. He initially planned to serve only one term. Following the 2024 elections, party leaders encouraged him to run again. He agreed, viewing that second term as his final one.

The chairman cited family reasons for his departure. He said he wants to reclaim time with his wife, Jacqueline, and their family. He noted that he has been missing them while meeting the demands of the volunteer position. McKoon is an attorney and former Georgia state senator. During his tenure, he worked with Republican leaders and grassroots activists across the state. His efforts included improving relations between the state party and Gov. Brian Kemp.

The announcement comes days before the November 3 midterm elections. Georgia Republicans will select a new chairman when McKoon's current term expires. He did not name a preferred successor. He also did not announce any future political plans. His statement focused on his intention to step back from the role.
