Josh McKoon is leaving his role as chairman of the Georgia Republican Party.

The longtime party leader confirmed he will not seek a third term, ending his tenure at the head of the state’s major political organization. McKoon has communicated his intentions to activists and allies for several months but made the decision public on October 30, 2026.

McKoon stated that his original plan when drafted for the chairmanship in 2023 was to serve only one term. He accepted a second term following the party’s victories in the 2024 election cycle, agreeing to a specific time limit for his leadership. He described his current position as a two-year commitment that is now complete.

“I’ve been a member of the family and have had the opportunity to serve and make a contribution in my missive of the position. I have been fortunate to have a clear understanding that it would be my second and final term,” McKoon said. He emphasized that the party requires a clean transition to allow the next leader to focus on the state’s political direction without the weight of the previous administration.

Vice Chair Brian Braim will assume the chairmanship following McKoon’s departure. Braim, a former state legislator and local political figure, has served alongside McKoon as the public face of the party in recent years. The handoff is designed to ensure continuity in the party’s operations and strategic planning.

McKoon noted that the current political climate in Georgia demands a fresh perspective for the upcoming years. He expressed confidence that the party is well-positioned for its next chapter, citing the strong foundation built during his two terms. He stated that the next chairman could make clear decisions regarding the future of Georgia Republicanism.

The announcement comes as Georgia Democrats prepare for the midterm elections. Senate candidate Raphael Warnock and other party officials are focusing on voter turnout and statehouse control. The change in Republican leadership occurs while the party remains united behind its candidates for the governor’s race and other key down-ballot positions.
