The Atlanta Falcons lost 16-0 to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday in a game defined by extreme statistical anomalies. The Falcons' offense was held without a scoring drive, while the Buccaneers achieved a feat of passing inefficiency that had not been seen in decades.

Tampa Bay quarterback Baker Mayfield attempted three passes and completed none. He did not throw his third and final pass until approximately 90 seconds into the second half. According to ESPN and NFL research cited in game reports, no team has won a game with zero completions since 1974. No team has won by double digits with zero completions since 1945.

The Falcons' passing attack was equally erratic. Quarterback Michael Penix threw four interceptions in the contest. That marked an interception rate of one per six attempts. Penix had thrown only one interception earlier in the season, during his debut against Green Bay more than a month prior. The Falcons also failed to convert on all 12 third-down opportunities they faced.

Penix acknowledged the difficulty of the performance to reporters after the game. He noted that many family members were in attendance and that he had never played a game like it in his life. He stated that the team plans to shake it off and move forward.

The Buccaneers' ground game set multiple records. They rushed for 324 total yards, which is the highest single-game total in franchise history. Bucky Irving carried the ball for 170 yards, a career high. Kenneth Gainwell added 140 rushing yards, also a career high. Irving and Gainwell became the second pair of Buccaneers to both rush for more than 100 yards in the same game. The previous pair to accomplish this was Warrick Dunn and Mike Alstott.

The Falcons entered the game with the fourth-best rush defense in the NFL. Despite that ranking, the defense struggled to contain the Buccaneers' running backs. Defensive back Jessie Bates III provided a momentary defensive success when he punched up a Tampa Bay touchdown run in the first quarter. Bates described the game as the craziest he had been part of, at least in the first half.

The Falcons face the Cincinnati Bengals in Madrid on Sunday. Pass rusher James Pearce Jr. is expected to return from suspension for that contest.

In other local sports news, MLB's initial free agency quiet period ends at 5 p.m. on Sunday. The Atlanta Braves must decide by that time whether to issue one-year qualifying offers to players including Mauricio Dubon, Raisel Iglesias, and Tyler Mahle. The qualifying offer amount is set at 23.15 million dollars.

Dubon and first baseman Matt Olson received Gold Glove awards on Sunday night. In the NBA, Atlanta Hawks rookie Kingston Flemings is suspended for the game against the Indiana Pacers at 7:30 p.m. The suspension follows an elbow-related incident over the weekend.
