Kochetkov hits 10 straight wins, a mark only two others have reached

Pyotr Kochetkov stopped 26 shots on Sunday in a 6-0 victory over the Winnipeg Jets in Raleigh, N.C. The result gave the Carolina Hurricanes goaltender 10 consecutive wins to start the season. Only two goalies in National Hockey League history have started a season with more victories.

Kochetkov now matches the record set by Carey Price ten years ago. Price achieved 10 straight wins with the Montreal Canadiens in the 2015-16 season. Jack Campbell holds the all-time record with 11 consecutive wins for the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2020-21. Kochetkov’s performance marks the second-longest season-opening streak in league history.

The Hurricanes won their fourth straight game. Sean Walker scored two goals. Sebastian Aho, Juuso Valimaki, Logan Stankoven, Mark Jankowski, and Jesperi Kotkaniemi also found the back of the net. Stankoven, Seth Jarvis, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Shayne Gostisbehere each recorded two assists. The shutout is Kochetkov’s second this season, bringing his career total to 13 in 135 games.

The Jets have lost nine games in a row, with a record of 0-7-2. Goalie Stuart Skinner made 12 saves before being pulled after allowing the fifth goal. Clay Stevenson stopped 13 shots in relief for Winnipeg.

Elsewhere in the league, Connor McDavid extended his record season-opening assists streak to 15 games. McDavid scored one goal for the Edmonton Oilers in a 4-1 win over the New York Rangers. His goal at 50 seconds into the first period was his 418th career goal, passing Glenn Anderson for fourth most in franchise history. It was also his eighth goal scored in the first minute of a game, a franchise record previously held by Mark Messier. McDavid is the fastest player in league history to reach 30 assists.

The Minnesota Wild defeated the Washington Capitals 5-1. Quinn Hughes and Michael McCarron scored in the first 5 minutes and 27 seconds. Kirill Kaprizov scored his 500th career point and 15th goal of the season with an empty-netter. The Wild allowed two goals or fewer for the fifth time in six games.

The Philadelphia Flyers beat the Utah Mammoth 6-3. Travis Konecny scored and assisted in his return after missing 10 games with a lower-body injury. Matvei Michkov scored his 10th goal of the season, becoming the first Flyer to reach that mark in his first 17 games since Konecny in 2023. The Flyers snapped a three-game winless streak.

The Anaheim Ducks overcame a three-goal deficit to beat the Ottawa Senators 6-3. Cutter Gauthier scored twice in the third period, including the go-ahead goal. Laurent Brossoit made 20 saves in his debut for Anaheim. The Ducks won for the second time in nine games.
