The Associated Press projected Byron Donalds as the next governor of Florida on Tuesday, marking a historic shift in the state’s executive leadership. The former U.S. representative secured 50.3% of the vote, edging out Democratic opponent David Jolly, who received 48.8% of the total.
Donalds, a Republican, will succeed Ron DeSantis and become the first Black person to hold the office of Florida governor. He will be joined in the administration by his running mate, former State Senator Bryan Avila, who is projected to serve as lieutenant governor.
Following the projection, Donalds addressed supporters at a celebration in Hollywood. He announced that he received two calls that evening: one from Jolly to concede the race and another from President Donald Trump. The president had endorsed Donalds more than a year prior, a move that helped shape the Republican primary field.
In a social media post, Donalds expressed his gratitude to voters. “I am humbled and grateful beyond measure,” he wrote. “As your Governor, I will give you everything I have. We are going to make life in Florida more affordable. We are going to keep our streets safe. We are going to invest in our young people so that they can attain the Florida Dream that all of us love so dearly.”
During his victory speech, Donalds outlined his initial priorities, focusing on lowering insurance premiums and protecting the environment. He stated his intention to continue the policy legacy of DeSantis while maintaining a distinct distance from Trump. He credited his campaign’s daily efforts for securing the final margin of victory.
Donalds addressed the financial pressures faced by residents, noting that many are struggling to balance their accounts. “We have people who are looking at their bank accounts, not month in, month out, day in, day out trying to figure out how they’re going to make ends meet,” he said. “And my mission as Florida’s next governor is to make sure that they can build a great life here in the great state of Florida.”
While Donalds complimented his opponent in his speech, the Democratic side saw a strong turnout, particularly during early voting. However, a surge of election day voters on Tuesday propelled Donalds to the final win.
