Democrats captured the governor's office and a U.S. Senate seat in Texas on Tuesday night.

In a series of decisive results from the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, Democratic candidates won key statewide races that had been held by Republicans for decades. Gina Hinojosa defeated incumbent Governor Greg Abbott to take control of the state executive branch. She will serve as the first Latina governor in Texas history. In the closely watched U.S. Senate contest, Democrat James Talarico defeated Republican Ken Paxton. This victory marks the first time a Democrat has won a Texas Senate seat in more than 30 years. The Democratic Party also won the lieutenant governor and attorney general positions, completing a sweep of the top four statewide offices.

The results signal a substantial change in the state's political alignment. Republicans had maintained dominant control over Texas politics for a long period prior to this election. The wins for Hinojosa and Talarico ended that streak of Republican dominance in the top statewide posts. The outcome reflects shifting voter attitudes and economic concerns that contributed to the turnout. While Republicans retain influence in other areas of the state, the balance of power in the state government has shifted decisively to the Democratic side. The Texas Legislature remains a point of ongoing attention as the new administration prepares to take office.

Hinojosa and Talarico are now set to assume their respective roles following the certification of the election results. The new leadership structure in Austin will include a Democratic governor, lieutenant governor, and attorney general, alongside a Democratic U.S. senator. This configuration of offices marks a distinct departure from the previous political order in the state.
