Nashville rock band The Bretheren released their debut single, "Meet Me in the Back Room," on all streaming platforms as of today. The track marks the first time the group has introduced original material to the public.
The song features a garage rock sound described as having a Nuggets influence with contemporary high fidelity. Singer-guitarist Joey McClellan performs the lyrics, which address people organizing in secret to take action against global uncertainty. A central line in the refrain states, "We can change the guard / And rise against the big doom."
The group consists of McClellan, Dave "Moose" Sherman on keys, Paulie DeVincenzo on bass, and Dave Scalia on drums. Members have spent more than ten years as the backing band for country singer Elle King. Individual members have also recorded with artists including Dawn Richard, Rufus Wainwright, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.
The Bretheren recorded the track at their studio, Bretheren Sound, in Madison. The space contains amplifiers, a piano, and a tonewheel organ. The group also released a performance video recorded live at the same location.
The video was directed by Hennen Payne and Rett Rogers. The cameras capture the band moving through the mood-lit room while performing. The visual presentation emphasizes the raw quality of the live instruments and the band's interaction with the equipment.
The release serves as the debut for Hot Waltz, a new record label founded by Parker Gispert. Gispert is a solo artist and the frontman of the pop-rock trio The Whigs. He has been active in the Southern rock scene for twenty years.
The Bretheren and Hot Waltz have posted updates on their respective Instagram profiles regarding the release.
