Secretary of State Marco Rubio cancelled a traditional group photograph at the start of Group of 20 talks in Atlanta after European officials threatened to walk out. The decision came as diplomats from the world's largest economies gathered Friday, with the U.S. host nation pulling the plug to avoid a visual controversy before substantive discussions began.

Rubio opened the session by urging unity on interconnected economic and geopolitical crises. He cited disruptions to global energy, food supplies, and freedom of navigation as severe threats to the global economic order. However, participants indicated that a joint statement from the foreign ministers was unlikely before the meetings concluded Saturday.

Disagreements over Russia's role in the Ukraine conflict and Poland's bid for G20 membership created friction. Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, attending as a guest for the first time, noted the difficulty of reaching consensus while wars continued. He stated that having participants in those wars around the table makes agreeing on a common line very difficult.

European leaders expressed explicit discomfort with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. British Foreign Secretary Ed Milliband argued that serious nations must work harder to secure peace in Ukraine while international law is being trampled. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul added that there is no normality with Russia, but the group must exchange controversies at the table without sending falsely optimistic signals.

The U.S. approved a proposed $2.1 billion sale of Patriot air defense interceptors for Ukraine on Friday. Lavrov commented on upcoming three-way talks between Russia, Ukraine, and the U.S., saying Zelenskyy's position on long-range strikes does not help preparation. He asserted that Moscow will not allow Ukraine to pose a military threat to Russia's security interests.

South Africa, a G20 founding member, was not invited to the Atlanta gathering. Spokesperson Phindile Kunene said South Africa maintained its nonparticipation was not voluntary. The country is in dispute with the Trump administration and is ready to participate on equal footing when Britain takes over the G20 presidency next year.

The prospect of renewed U.S. military strikes against Iran hangs over the event. U.S. officials have told regional allies to prepare for potential action after Tuesday's midterm elections. Rubio met with Saudi and Turkish counterparts on the sidelines to discuss navigation issues in the Strait of Hormuz, Red Sea, and South China Sea.
