U.S. Southern Command confirmed on Tuesday that a military strike in the eastern Pacific killed five individuals identified as narco-terrorists. The operation, conducted by Joint Task Force Western Hemisphere under SOUTHCOM direction, targeted a go-fast vessel operating along known trafficking routes.

The command stated that confirmed intelligence showed the vessel was actively involved in narco-trafficking. Video released by SOUTHCOM depicts the ship in open water before it erupts into a large fireball. The agency did not provide a specific geographic location for the strike beyond the general region.

This incident marks the latest action in a multi-month campaign by the Trump administration to target suspected cartel vessels. According to The Associated Press, the initiative has now resulted in at least 240 deaths across more than 70 separate strikes. Military officials have consistently described the crews aboard targeted ships as narco-terrorists or alleged links to designated terrorist organizations.

Despite these claims, the military has generally not named the individuals killed or provided physical evidence that the vessels contained narcotics. This lack of transparency has drawn scrutiny from lawmakers, legal experts, and human rights groups. Critics have questioned the legal basis for using lethal force against suspected traffickers outside of traditional battlefields.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio addressed the operational strategy last month. He stated that the U.S. was increasingly seeking to conduct counter-narcotics operations in cooperation with regional allies and in accordance with their laws. Rubio told reporters that while the U.S. has the capacity to act unilaterally, working with allies is the most effective approach.

The Secretary added that the military would still blow up ships if need be. He noted that decisions would be made on a strike-by-strike or operation-by-operation basis. In recent months, SOUTHCOM has also released footage of personnel intercepting, boarding, and sinking vessels after removing their crews.

The current operations continue as the administration balances its unilateral capabilities with diplomatic efforts to align actions with regional legal frameworks.
