Malcolm Roach dropped Patrick Mahomes on the final play of the game to seal a 28-24 victory for the Denver Broncos over the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday. The sack occurred on fourth-and-goal with four seconds remaining, preserving the lead that moved Denver to the top of the AFC West standings.

The win marked the 15th consecutive one-score game victory for the Broncos across the last two seasons. It also extended Denver's winning streak to six games. The team improved to a 6-2 record, placing them a half-game ahead of the Chiefs, who dropped to 5-2 after losing their second straight contest.

The game turned in the fourth quarter after the Broncos trailed 24-13. Bo Nix threw a two-yard touchdown pass to tight end Nate Adkins, and Jaylen Waddle caught the two-point conversion to cut the deficit to 24-21. The Chiefs' Harrison Butker then missed a 54-yard field goal attempt wide right in steady rain with 2.5 minutes left.

Denver took the lead on the next two plays. Nix connected with rookie running back Jonah Coleman for a 51-yard gain on first down. Coleman then ran for a five-yard touchdown on the following snap. Nix recorded his 15th career game-winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime, surpassing Dak Prescott for the most such drives by a quarterback in his first three seasons since the 1970 merger.

The Chiefs mounted a late push to reclaim the lead. Emmett Johnson returned a kickoff 44 yards, and Travis Kelce caught a 32-yard pass to bring Kansas City inside the Denver five-yard line with 35 seconds left. The drive stalled when Mahomes threw an incomplete pass on second down and third-string safety J.L. Skinner stuffed Kenneth Walker III on third down.

On fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, Mahomes threw what appeared to be the winning pass to Rashee Rice, but the play was negated by a false start penalty on right tackle Jaylon Moore. On the do-over, Roach and Nik Bonitto broke through the line to sack Mahomes for a six-yard loss.

Coach Sean Payton called the result a big win for his team and expressed pride in their grit. He noted that the false start penalty was crucial because it changed the play-calling options. Mahomes acknowledged the difficulty of the moment, stating that he had to trust the play call but wished he had gotten the ball out faster to avoid the sack.

Nix finished the game 20 for 32 for 222 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Mahomes completed 30 of 41 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns. Walker III ran for 69 yards on 21 carries for Kansas City. The Broncos will visit the Carolina Panthers next Sunday, while the Chiefs host the New York Jets.
