Nia Long announced the release of her upcoming memoir, The Sound of Purpose, in an Instagram post this week.
The 55-year-old actress made the announcement while attending the 6th Annual Academy Museum Gala, an event that coincided with her recent induction onto the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
In a synopsis for the book, Long says she will examine her early years, including her upbringing in Brooklyn and her family’s subsequent move to Iowa.
She notes that she was one of only four Black students at her school in Iowa. The memoir will also address the racism and colorism she encountered while building her acting career.
“The Sound of Purpose is an intimate unpacking of my life, a healing journey inward, comforted by the signs and sounds that led me to self-love and safety,” Long told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.
The book will explore the complicated family dynamics that shaped her early life. This announcement came during a busy week for celebrity news, which also saw Ashanti reveal that Nelly changed their son’s first diaper.
