Since the start of last season, Malachi Toney has caught 182 passes, a total no other player in college football has matched. The Miami wide receiver enters Saturday's game at Notre Dame Stadium seeking to extend that record. His opponent will be Leonard Moore, the Fighting Irish cornerback who anchors the nation's top-ranked defense.

The two players represent the best offensive and defensive assets of their respective teams. Miami, ranked No. 1 and undefeated at 8-0, relies heavily on Toney as the primary target for its offense. Notre Dame, ranked No. 4 with a 7-1 record, depends on Moore to limit production from opposing receivers. The matchup has drawn attention beyond the team standings because both athletes are considered among the best in their positions.

Coaches on both sides have expressed respect for the opposing player. Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson described Moore as the best at his position. Notre Dame coach Marcus Freeman called Toney "one of one" and noted that the receiver improved his game this year. Freeman admitted he did not know much about Toney before their previous meeting, when Toney was still 17 and had reclassified to college a year early.

The teams met last season in a 27-24 Miami victory. That game determined which program received the final at-large bid to the College Football Playoff. Toney recorded six catches for 82 yards and a touchdown in that contest. He opened the scoring with a reception. Freeman said watching Toney live in person confirmed his athleticism, speed, and route-running ability.

Toney is currently tied with Mike Harvey for the second-most career receptions in Miami history. His next catch will give him the outright No. 2 spot on the school's all-time list. He trails school record holder Xavier Restrepo by 18 catches. Despite the individual spotlight, Toney said the matchup is simply an opportunity to get better. Moore agreed, noting he looks forward to competing against all of Miami's receivers, not just Toney.

Moore has seven interceptions and 23 pass breakups in his career. Freeman noted that these numbers reflect the fact that opposing teams rarely test Moore because they know his ability to make plays. Freeman added that Moore has the skill set to play corner, nickel, and safety. He said Moore is considered one of the top players in the country due to his mental and physical capabilities.

Miami quarterback Darian Mensah said he is looking forward to the game "massively." He noted that Toney has performed well all year and that Moore will win some plays. The teams will meet Saturday night at Notre Dame Stadium. Toney wears jersey number 1 and Moore wears number 15.
