The Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Miami Heat 138-117 on Monday night. Luka Doncic led the way with 42 points, 13 assists, and seven rebounds. The victory improves the Lakers to a 6-2 record on the season.
Doncic has been prolific in recent weeks. He scored at least 37 points in five consecutive games. In that stretch, he averages 43.4 points per contest. He also made six three-pointers against the Heat. This marks his fourth game with 40 or more points in his last five appearances.
Austin Reaves added 27 points for Los Angeles. Walker Kessler contributed 15 points and 15 rebounds. The Lakers played on short rest, having faced the Toronto Raptors on Sunday. Before that, they played on Friday. Despite the schedule, Doncic maintained his production.
For the Heat, Giannis Antetokounmpo recorded 30 points, 12 rebounds, and seven assists. Klay Thompson scored 19 points, and Bam Adebayo added 16. The team entered this game on a five-game western road trip. This loss brings their season record to two wins and five losses.
This is the first season Antetokounmpo plays for Miami. The Heat had a rest day on Saturday and did not play since Friday. They struggled to keep pace with the Lakers' offense throughout the contest.
Doncic started the game with 16 points, five assists, and four rebounds in the first quarter. The reigning NBA scoring champion averages 15.0 points in the opening period this season. He has scored at least 13 points in the first quarter in six of his seven games.
Heat president Pat Riley appeared on the arena scoreboard during the game. Lakers fans gave him a large ovation. The team unveiled a statue of Riley, a Showtime era coach, outside their downtown arena last season.
