The Houston Rockets finished Monday night’s game against the Boston Celtics with a 109-93 victory. The win extended their season record to seven wins and one loss. They are currently tied with the Philadelphia 76ers for the best record in the National Basketball Association. The Rockets achieved this standing despite the start of the NBA season often being overshadowed by other major sporting events. The team did not wait for the traditional unofficial start of the season around Christmas Day to establish a strong position.

The Rockets’ only defeat occurred on the road against the Dallas Mavericks during NBA Cup play. The Mavericks’ Kyrie Irving played with exceptional efficiency in that contest. Houston was also playing with fewer available players at the time. Aside from that specific loss, the team has shown consistency. They have not just won; they have won by demonstrating high levels of efficiency in various statistical categories. This performance suggests the current success is based on sustainable factors rather than a temporary streak.

The Rockets rank in the top 10 of the league in at least 14 different offensive metrics. These include points, field goal percentage, three-point percentage, and free throw percentage. They lead the league in plus/minus and assist ratio. They also rank highly in turnovers, offensive rating, and effective field goal percentage. This level of offensive output has been rare for the franchise in recent years. The team has historically relied more heavily on defensive stops under head coach Ime Udoka. The current season marks a distinct shift where offensive execution is a primary driver of success.

Defensive metrics remain strong as the season progresses. The Rockets sit sixth in Defensive Rating and second in opponent three-point percentage. They hold opponents to an average of 106.4 points per game, which ranks fourth in the league. They also rank eighth in steals and ninth in blocks. While these numbers are already competitive, the structure of the roster suggests room for further improvement. The team is positioned to climb higher in the league rankings for defense as the season moves toward the midpoint.

Several factors contributed to the current roster composition. Veteran players Fred VanVleet and Steven Adams returned to the team. New acquisitions Marcus Smart and Bogdan Bogdanovic joined the squad. Younger players including Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr., Tari Eason, Reed Sheppard, and Amen Thompson have matured in their roles. This mix of experience and youth has created a deep bench. The team can rest key players without seeing a drop in performance. Kevin Durant is playing at his lowest usage rate in several years, which allows other players to take on more responsibilities.

Coach Ime Udoka is in his fourth full season with the franchise. The players have a clear understanding of his system and expectations. Marcus Smart fits into the scheme effectively, and there is visible buy-in from the entire locker room. No player is forced to play out of position. Amen Thompson and Reed Sheppard do not have to handle the ball as frequently. Alperen Sengun has added distance to his shooting range and serves as a central part of the offense. Jabari Smith Jr. and Tari Eason focus on defense and shooting threes. This alignment of skills and roles has produced the current level of team chemistry.
