Israel is locked in a political stalemate following Thursday's election, with final tallies confirming a hung parliament that leaves no single side with a majority.

Local media projections place Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's bloc at 53 seats. Opposition parties hold 48 seats, while Arab-led parties command 19 seats.

The 19 seats held by Arab-led parties now determine the direction of the government. Neither the Netanyahu bloc nor the opposition can reach the 61-seat threshold required to control the 120-member Knesset without them.

Former military chief Gadi Eisenkot, the lead rival to Netanyahu, has said he is open to working with these parties. He did not explicitly name them in his first public statement since Wednesday but framed the goal as a government reflecting the will of the people.

The Joint List, one of the Arab parties, described the election results as an unprecedented show of strength. It stated it was open to political cooperation with Jewish parties willing to work with them.

Netanyahu's Likud party remains in charge during this transition period. The party has accused Arab-led groups of stealing the election and asked the election committee to investigate, though it has not provided specific evidence.

President Yitzhak Hertzog will task a candidate with forming the next government next week. He has signaled a desire to avoid a second round of voting, a goal shared by Eisenkot.

If coalition talks fail, Israel will face new elections early next year. This would raise questions about voter turnout among Arab citizens and the tens of thousands of Israelis who traveled home from abroad to vote.

The political deadlock occurs against a backdrop of deep social divisions and ongoing security concerns. Issues include military service exemptions for the ultra-Orthodox and the impact of the war in Gaza.

Netanyahu faces corruption allegations and accusations of delaying hostage deals for political gain. His government also faces criticism over the treatment of Palestinians in Gaza and settler violence in the West Bank.

The threat of further strikes against Iran adds to the uncertainty. The Trump administration has discussed new attacks after the US midterm elections on November 3.

Experts suggest Netanyahu could use a renewed war with Iran to push for a unity government. This would delay a public inquiry into the security failures that led to the October 7, 2023 attack.
