House Democrats have deployed 300 staff members to serve as observers in races expected to be close on Election Day. Rep. Joe Morelle, the ranking member on the Committee on House Administration, announced the effort during a virtual briefing on Friday. He stated the goal is to have firsthand notes and observations from people on the ground while results are tabulated.

Morelle said the observers will be placed in roughly 60 to 70 different locations across the country. He noted that these are places where the caucus expects elections to be very close. The team includes lawmakers, litigators, activists, and organizers. Morelle said the group is charged with leading the caucus-wide effort to secure the election. He added that the goal is to prevent President Donald Trump from succeeding in what he described as attempts to subvert the process.

The deployment comes as the administration makes claims about election security. Trump posted on Truth Social last Monday, offering a $1 million award for reporting voter fraud. Morelle said the Democratic oversight effort is designed to counter these moves. He emphasized that every eligible American must have the opportunity to cast a meaningful ballot. He added that voting must be free from threats, intimidation, and violence.

The Trump administration has suggested throughout the cycle that tens of thousands of ineligible voters, including immigrants, are casting ballots. However, the Justice Department has only charged a few dozen people with election-related crimes this year. Morelle said the caucus wants ballots counted fairly and accurately. He stated that the observers will provide contemporaneous records should any challenges arise.

In the days before the midterms, the administration attempted to intervene in elections in Alaska and California. Both efforts were blocked before Election Day. In Alaska, the administration sought to block state officials from certifying the U.S. Senate race results. The lawsuit focused on whether voters were confused by two candidates with similar names. A federal judge threw out the suit on Sunday.

In California, the administration tried to force the state to set aside 20,000 ballots. The claim was that the ballots belonged to likely noncitizens. The Supreme Court rejected that attempt on Monday. Morelle said the presence of observers will help ensure that such disputes are handled with clear records. He said the team will be working to make sure the process is secure.
