Voters in Harris County and across the nation cast their ballots on Tuesday for the midterm elections.

The affordability of daily necessities is the top issue for most people at the polls.

This concern cuts across party lines, with both Democrats and Republicans citing high costs as their primary reason for voting.

Dwayne Stanford, a father of eight in suburban Cincinnati, told The New York Times that the prices of normal goods have risen dramatically. He noted that the impact is felt in everyday purchases.

Peris Morgan, a voter in Sterling Heights, Michigan, shared a similar view with NBC News outside a polling place on Monday. She stated that rent, groceries, and gas are all expensive. She said the cost of living does not add up against what people are paid.

The elections also serve as a check on the current administration. President Donald Trump promised to lower prices and address the affordability crisis when he won his term.

Pollster Frank Luntz spoke with former Trump voters who said they are switching their votes to the Democratic Party. These voters cited the economy and a sense that the president overpromised and underdelivered.

A war in Iran has added to economic pressures. The conflict has raised gas prices, grocery costs, and inflation. An AP poll found that a majority of voters in both parties want Congress to focus on ending the war in Iran. This desire is second only to concerns about the economy to voters.

Republican enthusiasm appears lower than usual this year. The Washington Post reports a lack of excitement among traditional conservatives. Many of these voters recall a core campaign promise of no new wars. The start of the conflict with Iran without a clear end date has weighed on their support.

Members of the House Republican conference are privately concerned about how presidential actions have affected their goals. One anonymous House Republican told Politico that the group felt confident earlier in the year. That confidence changed after the president ordered strikes on Iran. The official described a series of events that followed the military action.

Another anonymous Republican House member told Politico that the president has hurt his own party. The member compared the current situation to the Obama administration, stating that Obama only upset his enemies and never his friends.

The results of Tuesday's vote will shape the balance of power in Congress. The outcome will also determine how the administration proceeds during the lame duck period.
