Kimi Antonelli now holds a 123-point advantage over his nearest rival, a gap that effectively dictates the remaining schedule of the Formula One season. The 20-year-old Italian driver clinched his ninth win of the year at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, on Sunday. His time of 1:35:16.650 over 56 laps established a clear margin of victory.

Charles Leclerc finished second, arriving 13.078 seconds behind Antonelli. Max Verstappen, the four-time defending champion, took the final podium position 17.485 seconds off the winner. The result extends Antonelli’s championship lead over his Mercedes teammate, George Russell, to 123 points with five races left on the calendar. Russell now faces a binary choice: he must win the next race in Mexico City to maintain a mathematical chance at the title. A result of second or lower ends his campaign.

Strategy played the deciding role in this race. While competing teams executed two pit stops, Antonelli’s engineers held him out until Lap 25. He made a single stop and returned to the track for the final 31 laps. Antonelli credited the team’s confidence in the plan, noting that the strategy allowed the team to believe in a one-stop approach.

A Virtual Safety Car on Lap 52, triggered when Valtteri Bottas’s Cadillac stopped on track, complicated the final laps. The caution period lasted until the penultimate lap. Verstappen suggested the VSC may have aided his podium finish, though he admitted his team’s pace and tire selection were insufficient. The four-time champion is now mathematically out of the title race and will spend two years without a world championship.

Mercedes also widened its constructors’ lead over Ferrari to 133 points. Mercedes stands at 607 points compared to Ferrari’s 474. Antonelli has now won both United States races scheduled for this year. The Las Vegas Grand Prix remains on the calendar for November.

Team principal Toto Wolff described the performance as Antonelli’s best to date. Wolff highlighted how Antonelli managed the inferior tire on the start and controlled the race throughout. Wolff called it the race of a champion who is not yet the champion, noting that Antonelli has outperformed the car’s potential. Antonelli agreed that while his Monza victory was special due to the car’s speed, Sunday’s execution was superior because of how the team built performance across the weekend.

Antonelli acknowledged that securing the championship is close, but he said his mindset remains unchanged. He aims to finish the season on a high note and enter the 2027 season with high hopes.
