Nevada voters cast decisive ballots to elect Aaron Ford as the state’s first Black governor, ending the tenure of Republican incumbent Joe Lombardo.

Ford, who has served as the state’s attorney general since 2019, secured the victory in a race that drew national attention from Democratic leaders. His win represents a strategic gain for Democrats seeking to expand their presence in key western states. Nevada holds six electoral college votes and is designated as an early state in the presidential nominating calendar.

Affordability dominated the campaign platform. Ford pledged to address the state’s housing shortage, which involves tens of thousands of missing units, and to manage high gas prices. He proposed pausing new tax abatements for artificial intelligence data centers and opposing such projects on federal land. These promises targeted voter concerns about the economic impact of new technology infrastructure on local communities.

Lombardo, a former Clark County sheriff, positioned himself as a defender of Nevada’s business-friendly climate. He warned that Ford would adopt the regulatory and tax policies of California Governor Gavin Newsom. The incumbent also linked his own policies to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, arguing they impacted Las Vegas tourism. Canadian visitors to the city dropped by 17% in 2025 amid an ongoing trade dispute between the two countries.

Law enforcement backgrounds influenced voter perceptions for both candidates. Lombardo, who served in law enforcement for more than 25 years before becoming sheriff in 2014, faced scrutiny after interrupting a police officer to identify himself by name when receiving a traffic ticket. Ford faced criticism for sponsoring a clemency application for a man who killed a pregnant woman in 2017. Despite their legal roles, both candidates addressed their records directly with voters throughout the campaign.

Ford’s personal history served as a central theme in his messaging. He described growing up in poverty and attending school hungry. He noted that his father worked at a grocery store and brought home stale candy bars for family dinners. Before entering politics, Ford worked as a math teacher and later earned a law degree. As attorney general, he secured millions in settlements from opioid manufacturers and successfully sued a student loan servicer and the gaming platform Roblox.

National Democratic figures traveled to Nevada to support Ford’s bid. California Governor Gavin Newsom and former Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned for him, viewing the state as a potential base for future presidential ambitions. Trump won Nevada in 2024 with 50.6% of the vote, making the current election a closely watched test of the state’s political shift.

The electorate in Nevada presents a complex demographic profile. Democratic strength in Las Vegas is balanced by heavily Republican rural areas. Nonpartisan voters constitute nearly 40% of the electorate, making predictions difficult. The state’s population includes a large number of working-class and Latino voters, along with a steady flow of residents moving in and out. This mixture of groups often results in outcomes that diverge from national political trends.
