Sam Surridge's header in the first minute of stoppage time broke a 2-2 tie and ended the New York Red Bulls' season with a 3-2 loss in Nashville.
The result capped a chaotic match in which the Red Bulls built a two-goal lead before falling short. Nashville SC finished with a 22-3-8 record and extended their unbeaten streak to nine games.
The match began with a penalty kick saved by Nashville rookie goalkeeper Brian Schwake in the 19th minute. Julian Hall gave New York the lead in the 34th minute, scoring his 13th goal of the season on assists from Adri Mehmeti and Sekou Kone.
New York doubled their advantage in the 40th minute. Rafael Mosquera, who had entered the game just one minute earlier, scored his first MLS goal on a setup by Cade Cowell and Devin Padelford.
Nashville answered with two own goals. Tim Parker put the ball in his own net in the 45th minute to make it 2-1. Julian Bazan committed the second own goal in the 81st minute to level the score at 2-2.
Cristian Espinoza provided the assist for Surridge's winner, marking his 15th assist of the season. The goal gave Nashville 74 points, tying the Inter Miami record for a single season. The club also finished unbeaten at home for the second time in its history.
New York goalkeeper Ethan Horvath made seven saves, while Schwake recorded two. The loss, combined with Toronto FC's defeat by Atlanta United, secured an Eastern Conference playoff spot for the Columbus Crew. New York hosts Atlanta United on Saturday, while Nashville travels to FC Cincinnati for their final regular-season match.
