Microsoft reported profits of more than $36.6 billion for the quarter ending in September, a figure that rose sharply just days after the company announced major workforce reductions. The financial results showed that the company is generating strong returns even as it implements one of the largest staff cuts in its recent history.

The company's quarterly revenue reached $92.3 billion, marking a 19% increase from the same period last year. Microsoft Cloud drove this growth, with revenue in that sector jumping by 30%. The cloud division includes enterprise technology services that companies rely on for data storage and processing.

Microsoft stated it will offer buyouts to approximately 60,000 employees. This move would reduce the company's global workforce of more than 220,000 people by more than a quarter. The voluntary redundancy program applies to eligible staff in Canada, India, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The company said the changes are necessary to adapt to changing business needs and to create greater operational flexibility.

Executive Chairman Satya Nadella told investors that artificial intelligence development has expanded adoption across various sectors. He described the technology as having delivered real-world impact in every industry. Microsoft noted that it is pouring billions of dollars into AI infrastructure, a strategy shared by other major tech firms.

The broader tech sector is facing scrutiny over the cost of AI investments. Amazon, Meta, and Alphabet are expected to spend more than $700 billion on AI chips and data centers this year. Investors are watching these figures closely to determine if the spending will generate sustainable returns. Microsoft flagged substantial AI investments as a potential risk to its finances in its latest report.

Microsoft shares rose by nearly 2.9% in after-hours trading in New York on Wednesday. This performance stood in contrast to Alphabet, the parent company of Google, which reported a 25% drop in quarterly net profit. Alphabet shares fell by 9.75% after the company said it would continue to invest heavily in AI despite the lower earnings.

The buyout offers provide departing workers with financial support and career planning resources. Microsoft described the initiative as a way to support employees while reshaping its organizational structure for the future of its technology products.
