DoorDash to buy Instacart
The proposed $17 billion deal aims to consolidate grocery delivery, a sector facing pressure from rising consumer prices.

DoorDash has agreed to pay $17 billion to acquire Instacart. The transaction seeks to expand DoorDash's grocery delivery footprint through a major consolidation in the sector.
The purchase combines two of the largest players in the automated grocery market. This move positions the merged entity to compete more directly with traditional retailers that have been expanding their own digital logistics networks.
Financial markets watch the deal for signs of pricing power. As an inflation gauge closely watched by the Federal Reserve showed an acceleration last month, consumer spending remains a key driver of economic growth.
The U.S. economy expanded at a 3.4% annual rate during the third quarter. This growth outpaced the second quarter, supported by strong consumer spending and increased investment in artificial infrastructure.
Analysts note that the acquisition costs a premium but locks in a dominant market share. The deal creates a larger platform with greater bargaining power with grocery chains and delivery partners.
Shareholders of both companies will vote on the merger terms. The closing of the deal is expected to follow a standard regulatory review period.
