A prison-based American Legion post in Louisiana says none of its members have returned to incarceration after completing its program. American Legion Veterans Memorial Post 432, housed at Elayn Hunt Correctional Center, reports a zero percent recidivism rate. Supporters of the program say it breaks the cycle of reoffending among veterans in custody.

The post was the first prison-based American Legion post established in Louisiana. It is designed to help incarcerated veterans rebuild their lives through peer-led mentorship and structured discipline. Officials with the program credit the combination of veteran-to-veteran support and a return to military-style routine with helping participants find purpose during their sentences.

Elayn Hunt Correctional Center is a state prison in Louisiana. The American Legion, chartered by Congress in 1919, is the nation's largest veterans organization. Post 432 operates inside the facility as a chartered unit, giving incarcerated veterans access to the group's programs and network.

The post's reported recidivism figure stands in contrast to national recidivism rates. The Bureau of Justice Statistics has tracked reoffending among released prisoners for decades. Post 432's zero percent figure applies to members of that specific American Legion post at the correctional center.

The program is one of several initiatives aimed at veterans within the criminal justice system. Federal and state agencies have long operated reentry programs for former service members. Post 432's structure, which pairs discipline with peer mentorship, is central to its stated mission of helping incarcerated veterans rebuild their lives.
