The New York Giants announced on Tuesday that they have agreed to a three-year contract extension with cornerback Greg Newsome II, a move that secures one of the core components of their defensive unit for the foreseeable future.

The new agreement is worth $46 million, with $32 million of that total guaranteed to the player. This deal replaces a one-year contract Newsome signed in March, which had been valued at just $8 million. By locking in the extension, the franchise raises his average annual salary to $15.3 million, a substantial increase for the 26-year-old defender.

Newsome’s path to this contract has been marked by fluctuating performance across three different franchises. A first-round draft pick in 2021, he was selected 26th overall by the Cleveland Browns, where he played for four and a half seasons. His career low passer rating allowed by opponents was 73.2, a figure he posted in both 2023 and 2025 while in Cleveland. He was subsequently traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars in early October of last year, where he surrendered five passing touchdowns across 12 games.

Since joining New York, his production has shifted dramatically. Through six games this season, opposing quarterbacks have completed only 53.6% of passes thrown his way, according to TruMedia data. Those targeters have posted a passer rating of just 57.7, a pace that represents the best figure of his career. He has recorded one interception and has allowed only two completions of 20 or more yards, while conceding no touchdowns this year.

The financial terms of the extension place Newsome in a specific tier of the NFL cornerback market. His average annual value sits just below Detroit Lions corner D.J. Reed, who earns $16 million per year, and just above Tennessee Titans corner Cordale Flott, who earns $15 million. This pricing keeps the deal outside the top 20 highest-paid cornerbacks in the league at the current moment.

The Giants now have a long-term partner in Newsome, extending his tenure with the team beyond the 2026 season. The move reflects the team's assessment of his recent on-field impact and his value relative to comparable players in the league.
