Spring-Ford field hockey senior Elise Reagan scored three goals in a seven-minute span on Wednesday night, leading her team to a 4-0 victory over Springfield-Delco. The decisive burst of scoring occurred in the final three minutes of the first half at Coach McNelly Stadium in Royersford.
The Rams, ranked No. 5, improved their overall record to 16-4-1. They enter the district quarterfinals following their loss to Boyertown in the Patriot League championship game. Springfield-Delco, the No. 12 seed, finished its season with a 15-5 record.
Reagan, a recruit for UMass-Amherst, converted a penalty stroke with 7:16 remaining in the second quarter to break the scoreless tie. One minute later, she utilized stick work to beat the defense and place a low shot into the corner of the net for her second goal.
Ninety seconds after that, Addie Striffler extended the lead to 3-0. Mia Keating set up the play with a corner insert. As Springfield-Delco defenders focused on stopping Reagan, who was positioned at the top of the circle, Striffler moved into an open space to finish the play. Reagan completed her hat trick six minutes into the second half off another corner.
Springfield-Delco goalie Riley McGowan, a senior, made six saves in her final game for the Cougars. Her counterpart, Spring-Ford senior Norah Kirsch, recorded seven saves to secure her eighth shutout of the season. Kirsch is committed to play for Northwestern University.
Spring-Ford head coach Jennie Anderson noted that the team handled the adversity of their recent league loss. She described Kirsch as a leader who directs the defense and Reagan as an offensive threat with unmatched finishing ability. The Rams earned 10 corners in the match, the highest number recorded in the contest.
The Rams will face No. 13 CB South in the district quarterfinals on Friday. The game is scheduled for 3:45 p.m. at Coach McNelly Stadium. CB South defeated No. 4 CB West in an upset during the previous round. District One awards seven of the 16 available bids to the PIAA Tournament, meaning all but one of the quarterfinalists will advance to the state tournament.
Reagan now has 26 goals on the season. She credited the team's grit and physical play for their success against a strong opponent. Kirsch emphasized the tightness of the group, noting that only eight of the 33 players on the roster are seniors. The team will look to maintain its resilience as it faces another physical opponent in the quarterfinals.
