Dexter McCoy declared victory in the Fort Bend County judge race on Tuesday night, defeating Republican challenger Daniel Wong. The election concludes a period of uncertainty in local government that began when County Judge KP George was suspended from office earlier this year amid ongoing legal proceedings.

Wong served as interim county judge starting in April 2026, a role he assumed after George's suspension. However, questions arose regarding Wong's authority to continue serving after the civil case that necessitated the appointment was dismissed. This procedural dispute cast a shadow over the interim leadership until the general election determined the final occupant of the seat.

McCoy, a Democrat, has held the position of Precinct 4 commissioner since his election in 2022. His campaign platform emphasized affordability, infrastructure improvements, and strategies to manage the county's rapid population growth. In contrast, Wong, a former Sugar Land City Council member, centered his message on government transparency and accountability, aiming to restore public trust in county leadership.

Although the title suggests a judicial function, the county judge does not preside over a courtroom. The position instead leads the Fort Bend County Commissioners Court, which controls the county budget and oversees decisions regarding roads, public safety, emergency management, and other essential county services.

The elected official will begin a four-year term in January 2027. This timeline places the start of McCoy's administration at the beginning of next year, following the conclusion of the current election cycle.
