The end of a trick-or-treating night turned urgent for a young girl in Detroit when bullets entered her home on Iroquois Street. At approximately 9 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, police received a call regarding a five-year-old victim who had been struck in the chest. Officers met the family at Children's Hospital of Michigan before moving to the scene near Moffat Avenue to gather initial evidence.
Investigators determined that shots were fired into the residence while the child played in a back room. The girl had just finished going door to door with her family and was enjoying the evening at home. Her mother, who was in the shower when the gunfire occurred, heard her daughter call out. The child told her parent, "I think I've been shot." The mother then rushed the girl to the hospital.
Deputy Chief Arnold Williams provided details to media outside the hospital late on Saturday. He noted that the victim was still wearing her Halloween costume at the time of the shooting. Williams described the incident as senseless, emphasizing that the child was simply trying to enjoy herself after her evening of trick-or-treating. He stated, "For our victim, she was in her Halloween costume at the time she got shot."
The girl is listed in stable condition. Williams acknowledged the luck involved in the outcome, saying, "Luckily for us, she was not fatally shot. So she's in stable condition, which is a blessing. But it could have been much worse." He added that the timing was particularly bad because many children were still outside in the neighborhood, engaging in holiday activities.
No suspects were in custody as of late Saturday night. Police continue to investigate the sequence of events that led to the gunfire. Williams warned the responsible party that officers would find them, stating, "We will find you and we're coming for you." The Detroit Police Department 7th Precinct is asking for information and directing tips to their detective unit or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
The shooting occurred in the 7th Precinct area. The case remains open as detectives review the scene and witness accounts. The child’s parents are recovering with her at the hospital. The community is awaiting further updates from the detective unit on the motive and identity of the shooter.
