Thomas Markle investigated in Baja California after storage unit search

Thomas Markle is under investigation in Mexico for allegedly storing child sexual abuse material.

The Baja California state attorney general's office confirmed that investigators searched a storage unit linked to Markle on Oct. 31. A judge had issued the search warrant for the Unit for Special Investigation in Combating Trafficking, and agents from the State Investigation Agency secured a property in Residencial San Marino.

Investigators found magazines and VHS tapes at the site that had not yet been reviewed under legal protocol, El Universal reported Nov. 3. The search came after the Daily Mail published a report about the discovery of photos and other material connected to minors, which prompted Mexican authorities to act quickly. According to that report, the unit held photos of naked Asian women, magazines showing children being sexually abused, letters, family keepsakes, black-and-white recordings of Asian women who appeared to be quite young, and books and magazines that sexualize children.

A second investigation is underway in the Philippines. Markle's son, Thomas Markle Jr., 60, said he found hundreds or possibly thousands of images of child sexual abuse material while going through boxes at his father's home in Cebu. The Sun reported that discovery on Oct. 22.

"When I found this material, I was horrified and had no choice but to report my father," Thomas Markle Jr. told The Sun. Thomas Markle is 82 years old.

The allegations reach across two countries and two separate probes. In Mexico, the search of the storage unit followed a warrant issued by a judge. In the Philippines, authorities are reviewing what Thomas Markle Jr. turned over after searching his father's boxes.
