Romanian President Nicușor Dan has formally attributed a recent arson attempt at a weapons factory to Russian coordination. The incident occurred at the Carfil plant in Brașov on September 14, 2026.
Dan described the event as a serious violation of national sovereignty. He stated that no foreign state has the right to act in such a manner on Romanian or other European soil. The president characterized the attack as part of a wider hybrid war against Europe.
The Romanian Intelligence Service identified a sabotage network coordinated from Moscow. The agency suspects a Ukrainian citizen and two Belarusian nationals of attempting to start the fire on the factory grounds.
Dan commended the intelligence services for uncovering the plot. He said Romania will act decisively to prevent similar incidents and identify those involved. The administration plans to continue close cooperation with NATO allies and European Union partners.
Dan noted that Russia uses diverse tools to weaken European democracies. He listed electoral influence, disinformation campaigns, information warfare, and cyberattacks as components of this strategy. The president previously pointed to a rise in Russian provocations within the European Union.
The attempted arson targeted critical infrastructure in the Brașov region. The three suspects remain central to the ongoing investigation into the sabotage network. Romania's government maintains that the response will be firm.
