A humanitarian convoy is set to enter the Russian-occupied city of Oleshky on Friday, marking the first major aid delivery since a localized ceasefire took effect on Tuesday. The truce has held for 54 hours, allowing military engineers to clear landmines from the roads leading into the stricken urban center. Ukrainian and Russian officials confirmed that both sides are adhering to the agreement, with no violations reported during the pause in fighting.

The ceasefire was brokered with the help of U.S. First Lady Melania Trump and Pope Leo XIV to assist approximately 2,000 people trapped in Oleshky. The arrangement was developed over five months and is part of a planned six-day window for aid and evacuation. Yana Lantratova, the Russian ombudsman, stated that her team is en route to the city to oversee the delivery, while Ukrainian ombudsman Dmytro Lubinets arrived in Belarus to head to the front line from there.

The truce is rare in a war that has persisted for more than four and a half years. Previous ceasefires have frequently collapsed or failed to materialize. In Kherson, a Ukrainian-held city near the conflict zone, residents have emerged from shelters. Nataliia Myronenko, a 42-year-old coffee kiosk owner, noted that customers are returning to the streets during lunch and evening hours, a shift from the pattern of people rushing past her stall to reach safety during attacks.

Outside the Oleshky zone, the war continues with significant intensity. A jet-powered Russian drone struck two passenger trains at a station in Dnipro, killing at least 14 people and injuring 10 others. In the northern city of Chernihiv, a Russian cruise missile killed two 15-year-old girls, while a drone attack on an apartment block in Kremenchuk claimed two more civilian lives. Russia’s Defense Ministry reported that its air defenses downed 1,214 Ukrainian drones overnight, a figure Moscow described as one of the largest attacks launched by Kyiv.

Diplomatic efforts are intensifying alongside the military actions. President Donald Trump has recently indicated a disengagement from Kyiv while waiving sanctions on Russia. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov is scheduled to travel to Atlanta, Georgia, for a G20 ministerial meeting starting Friday. Three-way talks involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine are under consideration for next month. Meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin praised Elon Musk as a genius, noting that Russia is building its own satellite internet network to coordinate with the American tech executive's Starlink service.
