Arsenal claimed the top spot in the Premier League on Sunday after defeating Liverpool 1-0 at Anfield, a venue where the visitors have not won since 2012. The result capped a volatile week for the Gunners, who had been eliminated from the League Cup by fourth-tier Fleetwood Town just five days earlier.

The decisive moment came in the 16th minute when Declan Rice delivered a low cross across the face of the goal. Kai Havertz finished at the back post to give Arsenal the lead. The goal extended Havertz’s record as the all-time leading German scorer in the league, bringing his total to 46 goals, one more than Ilkay Gundogan.

The goal stemmed from an early error by Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker. He attempted a short pass during a goal kick, which was intercepted by Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard. The interception launched a counterattack that ended with Rice’s assist. Rice credited the team's collective effort for the result, noting that the defensive line remained undefeated.

"In the end, that defensive line, the way we stick together, that togetherness we have, is undefeated," Rice said. "It’s nothing I’ve ever seen before."

Liverpool pressed hard in the first half but failed to find the target. Florian Wirtz struck the crossbar with a free kick, and Alexis Mac Allister headed a shot wide when unmarked. The hosts had multiple penalty appeals denied but recorded zero shots on target for the entire match. This marked the end of a five-game winning streak for Liverpool, which had previously lost to Manchester City at Anfield on October 11.

The loss leaves Liverpool in fifth place, nine points behind Arsenal. The defeat adds to the uncertainty surrounding the season following Manchester City’s guilty verdict for financial rule-breaking. Arsenal now holds a three-point lead over City and is five points ahead of Brighton, the only team to beat the reigning champions this season.

Manager Mikel Arteta, who was playing for Arsenal during the 2012 Anfield victory, restored his full regular lineup for the match. He acknowledged the unpredictability of the sport after the recent League Cup exit. "This is the magical thing about football," Arteta said. "It's so unpredictable, the next result."

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai admitted the inconsistency in his team’s form. "Some days it feels like we are at the top," Szoboszlai said. "and some days it feels like we are not even close. It takes time to get to the top."

Arsenal’s title defense continues with a strong defensive record, having kept six clean sheets in their last nine games. The team’s performance in this match provided a contrast to their Tuesday result, where a largely second-string squad fell to Fleetwood Town in a penalty shootout.
